However, the MCU did not really cover Fury’s grief for Coulson. Of course, Agent Phill Coulson, one of Fury’s most trustable allies, was killed by Loki in The Avengers.
Nick Fury has seen a lot in the MCU, but the death of a partner on the battlefield might change the character in a way that has never been done in the MCU movies. Both Talos and Hill criticized how Nick Fury vanished after everyone returned from the Blip, noting that they were disappointed by how Fury simply hid on SABER's space station. Fury had been working with Hill since before the events of The Avengers, meaning that they have been partners for more than a decade in the MCU’s timeline. Perhaps the biggest implication of Maria Hill’s death for the rest of Secret Invasion is how it will affect Nick Fury.
In addition, considering that Nick Fury himself faked his death in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, using a similar trick with Maria Hill in Secret Invasion could come off as cheap. As such, it would not make sense for Gravik to attack this hypothetical fake Hill. Likewise, any Skrull infiltrating Nick Fury’s team would probably be working for Gravik. Therefore, if Maria Hill was a Skrull in Secret Invasion, the same would have happened to the body of that Skrull after they were shot. When the fake Ross died in Secret Invasion’s opening sequence after being chased by Talos, his deceased body slowly returned to its Skrull form, starting with a greenish color taking over Ross’ face.
However, Secret Invasion episode 1’s ending clearly shows Maria Hill dying, and it spends a couple of minutes with the character while the real Nick Fury shows up. In a show where any Marvel character can be a Skrull in disguise, it can be easy to conclude that Maria Hill’s death might have been a fakeout and that a Skrull died in her place.
